How to Handle Emergencies in Independent Living

Residents in Independent Living may have Sage pendants or wristbands as well as Sage buttons in their units. When a resident presses one of these buttons, it triggers an alert that they need help. It is important to be able to view and respond to these alerts quickly, since they are a signal that the resident has an emergency. At the start of your shift ensure that you are logged in correctly to the IL care zone to make sure you never miss an emergency as they happen.

Viewing Emergency Alerts

  1. Alerts can be viewed from the top of the Today tab at any time.

  2. Tap on any alert card to view more detail on the resident or unit that reported the emergency.

  3. You can view resident profiles and their emergency contacts, dispatch emergency services, and communicate with team members as needed.

Resolving or Clearing Emergency Alerts

When responding to an independent living resident emergency be sure to follow all guidelines laid out by your facility to ensure proper procedures are followed.

  1. Tap on the alert card on the Today tab to open the details page.

  2. Tap Claim to inform other staff at the facility that you are responding to this alert.

  3. Select the relevant care request(s) from the list

  4. Enter any relevant notes (optional) and tap Submit to resolve the alert. This clears the alert, allowing the pendant or button to be able to trigger a new alert when needed.

Manually Reporting Emergencies

Emergencies may happen without a button press to trigger an alert in the app. In the event that an emergency occurs without an alert in the app, it is still important to capture this information as a record for staff at your facility to review. Follow these steps to manually report an emergency if needed.

  1. From the Today tab, tap on the Add Residents option near the top of the screen

  2. Search for the name of the resident in the search bar.

  3. Select the resident by tapping their name and tapping Save

  4. Tap on the resident's profile icon on the Today view

  5. Tap Log Care
  6. Select all of the relevant care requested or offered
  7. Enter any relevant notes (optional) and tap Submit.

You can also log resident care without adding the resident shortcut to your Today view. To do so:

  1. Tap the Residents tab found in the navigation bar at the bottom of the screen
  2. Search for your resident by either scrolling or typing in their name
  3. Tap on their profile
  4. Tap Log Care
  5. Select all of the relevant care requested or offered
  6. Enter any relevant notes (optional) and tap Submit.
